About Us


Dan Clayton

Dan is an independent management consultant, who enjoys helping internal audit, risk management and boards optimize their roles and outcomes. Dan began Accountability Consulting in May 2019. All of Dan’s career has centered on expanding the capabilities of risk and control professionals. From May of 2013 to May of 2019 Dan served as a Director of Strategy and Knowledge Management for the University of Texas System Audit Office. UT System is composed of eight Academic Universities serving over 200,000 students, and six Academic Medical Centers logging 1.6 Million inpatient days and 8.2 million outpatient visits in 2019.

Prior to UT System, Dan spent ten years in a similar role for CHAN Healthcare (now Crowe), the United States largest provider of healthcare internal audit – serving more than 12 percent of US not for profit hospitals at the time. As an avid researcher, Dan excels at designing and implementing new models and methods that leverage emerging ideas and trends. Dan began their audit model design interest after achieving unusual success early in Dan’s career with PricewaterhouseCoopers and Denver Health and Hospital – including millions in revenue enhancement and cost savings and identifying several significant frauds. Along with achievements in internal audit, Dan also a presenter and author. Dan worked as a Project Manager, Editor, and Contributing Author for the Internal Audit Foundation’s Sawyer’s Internal Auditing: Enhancing and Protecting Organizational Value (7th Edition, 2019). In November of 2019 he presented this publication at the European Commission conference for 650 legislative and government auditors.


Dan have a Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University, where Dan participated in the nation’s 3rd ranked Accounting program.


Dan is a Certified Public Accountant (TX), a Certified Internal Auditor, and a Certified Knowledge Manager

The IIA and Other Professional Association Involvement

Dan play a role in helping the Internal Audit Profession. Dan is currently an IIA National Facilitator and the Advocacy Chair for the SLC IIA Chapter. Dan previously served 4 years 2015-2019 as a member of the IIA International Committee of Research and Education Advisors. From 2009-2013 Dan served as the Professional Practices Committee Chair for the Association of Healthcare Internal Auditors where Dan won multiple awards. Finally, Dan served from 2014-2019 on the Advisory Board for Utah Valley University Internal Audit.
